Satisfaction success story for English Department 

The 2017 National Student Survey (NSS) tells the story of highly satisfied students at Aberystwyth University’s Department of English & Creative Writing,

Published Wednesday 9 August 2017, the NSS gives the Department an outstanding   rating of 97% for overall satisfaction compared to the average UK figure of 84%.

Aberystwyth is also ranked one of the top ten departments for English in the UK according to the annual poll of final-year undergraduates.

Students who responded to the survey gave a satisfaction rating of 97% for the teaching on their course and 96% for learning opportunities.

The Department’s undergraduate degree schemes also saw high overall satisfaction scores, with English Literature & Creative Writing on 97% and English Literature (Q300) on 96%.

These achievements are part of a wider success story at Aberystwyth University, which is rated the best in Wales and one of the top five higher education institutions in the UK for overall student satisfaction, according to the 2017 NSS.

The results show that overall satisfaction amongst students at Aberystwyth University stands at 91% - well above the average UK figure of 84%.

The NSS figures follow closely on the heels of the latest employability figures for UK universities which showed that 95% of Aberystwyth University graduates were in work or further study six months after graduating in 2016.

The National Student Survey is carried out annually by IPSOS Mori on behalf of the UK’s higher education funding councils and interviews more than 300,000 final year students in Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Students are asked to rate their university across a wide range of measures including quality of teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources, learning community and student voice.

Aberystwyth University’s rankings are based on the overall satisfaction question and use the list of higher education institutes from The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018.

English and Creative Writing at Aberystwyth: An Outstanding Performance for an Exceptional Student Experience (NSS 2016)

Aberystwyth University’s English & Creative Writing Department has received excellent scores in an influential poll of students.  

The English Department received a high rating of 96% for overall satisfaction in the 2016 National Student Survey (NSS), compared to a UK figure of 86%.  

All of the Department’s undergraduate degree courses surveyed saw high overall satisfaction ratings, with English Literature scoring 97% and English Literature & Creative Writing 94%.  

English as a subject gained a high score of 96% for its learning resources -ranking us first throughout the UK - whilst feedback on work stood at 91%, significantly higher than the national average in this crucial category.  

These achievements are part of a wider success story at Aberystwyth University which is rated the best in Wales and one of the top ten higher education institutions in the UK for overall student satisfaction, according to the annual survey 

The results show that overall satisfaction amongst students at Aberystwyth University stands at 92% - that’s six percentage points higher than the UK figure of 86%.  

The NSS collects data from 155 of the UK’s Higher Education Institutions and is recognised as an influential source of information for prospective students when considering their options.

REF 2014: Ranked in the Top 50 Departments for World Leading and Internationally Excellent Research

We are delighted by the news that in REF 2014 97% of our research was judged to be of International Standing or higher. Coupled with the QS ranking which places us in the top 150 English & Creative Writing departments in the world (top 30 in the UK) 2014 has been a fantastic year for recognition of our excellence. Since the last research assessment exercise in 2008 we have nearly doubled the percentage of our research ranked as World Leading and achieved an outstanding 49% increase in research outputs regarded as Internationally Excellent or World Leading. Congratulations to all of our staff on their success. This is excellent news for the whole Department, especially our students who are being taught by internationally recognised experts in their fields.
